Step 1: Who is your target audience?
This is where you choose your age group and get to know your readers. A great way to do this is to create an avatar.
What is an avatar? Well, it’s a person who represents who you are writing your book for. Creating an avatar helps you to keep your book focused on the proper audience and meets their needs and desires.
Step 2: What appeals to your target audience?
If I am writing my book for little boys who like trains, I would not want to write my book with references to princesses and bows. Think about what this train-loving boy likes and what will make him excited while reading your book.
Step 3: What is your beginning, middle, and end?
The best stories have a clearly defined beginning, middle, and end. Often, it shows a transition of the characters.
Example: Pete disliked peas. Pete tasted peas. Pete likes peas.
Having a beginning, middle, and end planned gives you a solid framework and helps prevent you from going off topic and losing focus.
Step 4: What is the message of your story?
By knowing your message and intent, you can avoid distractions in the book that may bear away from the message you want to impress on your audience.
Now that you have these first four steps, it’s time to begin the fun part: adding the fun and creativity to your story!
Remember that the first draft isn’t going to be perfect, but getting your ideas on paper will allow your book to take shape. Take a deep breath and get believe in yourself. Believe in what you are doing. If you have been wanting to write a book, then there is a reason. There is a purpose in making it a reality. What's the worst that can happen? Once it is done, then you have achieved success. You have finished your book.
I can't promise your book will be a best seller, as it takes a lot of work to get a book to that level through marketing and promoting it. But what I can promise you, is that you will NOT have a best seller if you never write the book. If you never get started, then I can promise you that you will not succeed. So, take the first step and give your book a chance for success by simply getting started!
